"Lagrasse is an unspoilt gem" Nick & Jan, Berks

Lagrasse is known as one of the prettiest villages in France. It lies in the foothills of the Corbières and yet is only 40 minutes from Mediterranean beaches and Carcassonne.

"The gite is so well placed - there is so much to do locally as well as further afield" Sanjay & Reshme

The vineyards and olive groves of the river valley are an inspiration for artists; and for those wanting more than an amble, the wild hills with their limestone crags, umbrella pines and cypress trees are on the doorstep. In the winter months there are breathtaking views to the snow capped Pyrénées.

"We'll miss the perfect river swim - beats any swimming pool" Karen & Karel, Seb & Charlotte, Belguim

Bird Life is abundant. Kingfishers can be seen from the open window and nightingales come back to the river bank each year. For bird sightings see our Visitor's Book.

Once here there is no need for a car (we can arrange airport transfer for you).

"This is the perfect place to cycle & walk, the scenery, flowers (particularly orchids) & wildlife here are second to none" Greer & Bobby, Kent UK - May 05

There are 4 excellent restaurants, a bakery with delicious cakes, a café/bar, shops, a busy delicatessen with ready prepared meals, tabac, post office, cash dispenser, doctors, chemist, garage and many 'caves' selling their own excellent wine.

"It is by far the most stunning location we have stayed in, the ambience is good & there is everything you need in the town"

Things to do

Lagrasse's Abbey founded in the 8th century, is shared between the commune and the Chanoines monks both of whom welcome visitors. The tennis court, football and boules pitch are open to all and we are happy to lend you racquets and balls.

Mediterranean beaches are within easy reach and there is windsurfing and sailing on the inland lagoons. The African Reserve a wonderful family day out as is a visit to Spain and the Dali museum.

All the spectacular Cathar Castles are within driving distance and for the more adventurous there are two within cycling distance. Bikes can be hired locally and we are happy to suggest itineraries depending on your desires be they spectacular mountain gorges or a leisurely trip along the Canal du Midi.

There are many beautiful medieval villages and towns including the dramatic 'cité' of Carcassonne and market day in local Lezignian is well worth a visit.

In the summer there are many local village 'Fetes' with live music and Lagrasse has its own 3 day music festival 'Abracadagrasse' (23-25th July). This year the Royal Ballet are planning 'one off' performance in the ground of the Abbey (17th July).

"We loved the fireworks in Lagrasse & the spectacular one of Carcassonne and we really enjoyed the 3 day music festival, Thanks a lot for the free tickets!"

The Fauvist's Collioure is 90 mins away and a must for art lovers. Neighbouring Ceret's Museum of Modern Art houses a series of Picasso ceramics.

Superb horse riding country for novice and experienced riders alike, 2 trekking centres nearby, 2/3 day riding circuits possible. Walkers will enjoy the well marked trails and scents of the 'garrigue'; pine, lavender, rosemary and thyme. The Sculpture Trail is a stimulating walk for all ages.

For winter visitors a day's skiing is only 2hrs away.
